Community Invited To Celebrate Resilience With Art
Art has long been considered a healing therapy, renowned for its ability to allow a person to express their emotions and feelings in ways other than words.
Coming to the Community Access Gallery at Latrobe Regional Gallery is Melbourne artist’s Hartmut Veit’s project to celebrate the spirit, strength and resilience of the Morwell community following the Hazelwood mine fire.
Latrobe City Council’s acting curator, Shelley McDermott, said the focus of the project was to facilitate emotional resilience and healing in the community.
"There will be a public information launch on Thursday 7 August from 6pm to 7pm at the Community Information & Recovery Centre, 20 Hazelwood Road, Morwell. There will then be an option to take part in group workshops and individual portrait sessions during August and September.
"Chosen participants will be interviewed, their voices and stories recorded and their portraits drawn from life in charcoal. Later in the studio Veit will create sculptures of the subjects and their stories, as abstracted representations from coal.
"The end result will be an exhibition of the sculptures in the Community Access Gallery at Latrobe Regional Gallery from 1 November to 30 November," Ms McDermott said.
"We would encourage the community to attend the launch session and group workshops to explore the opportunities and to share their stories," Ms McDermott concluded.
