Regional Victorians will see bushfire preparedness put under the microscope with the establishment of a new Parliamentary Inquiry. The Inquiry, led by the Environment and Planning Standing Committee of the Legislative Council, will examine Victoria’s preparedness, planning and response to this summer’s bushfires.

Melina Bath said the Allan government prioritises secrecy over action, and the Inquiry will review bushfire preparedness, response, planning, and include essential community input for improvement

Bushfire inquiry launched

Calling for submissions, The Nationals’ Melina Bath, Shadow Minister for Public Land Management and Committee member, welcomed the Inquiry after repeatedly raising concerns about transparency and the state’s bushfire readiness. Ms Bath said on bushfire preparedness and mitigation, the Allan Labor government continues to prioritise secrecy and spin over action.

"Regional communities have been devastated by this summer’s bushfires, and there is an urgent need to review preparedness and emergency response across the state. This Inquiry gives us the opportunity to look honestly at what worked, what didn’t, and what must change in our planning, prevention, funding and emergency coordination."

"Community input will play a crucial role in the Inquiry findings and recommendations. With fires impacting Dargo and east Gippsland and many locals assisting in the response efforts in the state’s north and west, it’s important to receive a wide variety of views," she said.

Bushfire inquiry open

Ms Bath added, "Whether you’re a first responder, CFA volunteer, affected farmer, fire‑impacted resident, small business owner, community member or contractor, your experiences provide valuable insight. This is the best way to get to the bottom of the Allan government’s flaws in bushfire preparedness and response and ensure we learn from these bushfires and strengthen our state’s future strategies."

The Inquiry Terms of Reference can be found on Parliament of Victoria’s website. Submissions are now open and closed on 15 March. They can be made at Parliament of Victoria website. The Committee is due to report by 1 June 2026.
