East Gippsland Shire Council is inviting the community to recognise outstanding local achievements by nominating deserving individuals and events for the 2027 East Gippsland Australia Day Awards. The awards shine a light on the everyday heroes who make East Gippsland such a wonderful place to live, work and thrive. They acknowledge outstanding contributions to our community, including volunteering, community service, sport, arts, culture and environmental initiatives.

Awards nominations open

Nominations are now open in the following categories:

  • Citizen of the Year
  • Young Citizen of the Year (under 27 years of age on 26 January 2027)
  • Community Event of the Year (for events held in 2026)

Mayor Cr Jodie Ashworth encouraged people to think about the individuals and groups whose contribution may otherwise go unrecognised. "Across East Gippsland, there are so many people who quietly give their time, energy and care to others," Cr Ashworth said.

Community contributions recognised

Cr Ashworth said, "They might be volunteering in their local community, helping to bring people together, supporting a sporting club, creating opportunities for others or simply stepping up when they are needed. These awards are a lovely way to acknowledge those contributions and say thank you."

"You don’t have to be a famous person or have done something extraordinary on a grand scale. Sometimes it is the consistent, generous contribution of someone who is simply there for their community that makes the biggest difference. I encourage everyone to think about who they know who deserves to be celebrated and take the time to nominate them," she said.

All nominees will be formally recognised at the East Gippsland Australia Day Awards ceremony in January 2027. Nominations close at 5pm on Sunday 6 December 2026. Nomination forms are at council’s website, Customer Service Centres and via the mobile bus service.
