By news@gippsland - 16th October 2026 - Back to News Bass Coast Shire Council has welcomed today's announcement that the Victorian Government has signed a multi-year contract to bring the Repco Supercars Championship back to Phillip Island. The news marks an exciting chapter for Phillip Island's rich motorsport history and provides a much-needed activation at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.
Visiting the circuit to welcome the announcement, Bass Coast Mayor Cr Brett Tessari said the news was a positive step to support Phillip Island and the broader region Supercars boost regional economyVisiting the circuit today to welcome the announcement, Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Brett Tessari said the news was a positive step to support Phillip Island and the broader region following the loss of the two flagship international events MotoGP and the World Superbikes to South Australia. "It’s fantastic that the Victorian Government is supporting another flagship motorsport event at our iconic Phillip Island Circuit. We’ve had a lot of discussions with both the State and Federal Government over the past 12 months, and those conversations will continue. We’re seeking to support a diverse calendar of events and experiences to support the ongoing economic transition following the loss of World Superbikes and MotoGP." "We look forward to welcoming the Supercars and their fans back to Phillip Island in 2027. For now, we are gearing up for a spectacular send-off for MotoGP – 30 years on the island and the last one is going to be a party like no other," Cr Tessari said.
The return of the Supercars in 2027 will coincide with the 30th anniversary of the modern Supercars era, continuing a motorsport story that has been part of Phillip Island identity for decades Supercars return in 2027Phillip Island has a long and proud history with the Australian Touring Car Championship and Supercars. The circuit first hosted a championship round in 1976, with 62 championship races held at Phillip Island since. The circuit most recently hosted Supercars in 2019, and its return in 2027 will coincide with the 30th anniversary of the modern Supercars era. The event will be delivered by the Australian Grand Prix Corporation (AGPC), which currently stages the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix. Council has worked closely with AGPC for many years through the delivery of MotoGP events on Phillip Island. While today's announcement provides plenty to look forward to, attention now turns to next weekend's final MotoGP on Phillip Island. Cr Tessari encouraged both locals and visitors to get involved in the celebrations. "If you've ever wanted to experience the atmosphere Phillip Island creates for major events, next weekend is the perfect opportunity. You don't need a ticket to the track to be part of it. Cowes will be buzzing with live music, race highlights, motorcycles lining Thompson Avenue, the Entertainment Precinct and a special motorsport exhibition at Berninneit celebrating Phillip Island's racing history," Cr Tessari said.
