Cowes Micro-Chipping DayPet owners can get their pets microchipped for only $20 from 10.00am-3.00pm on Saturday 29 March at the Cowes Cultural Centre By Bass Coast Shire - 28th February 2003 - Back to News Pet owners can get their pets microchipped for only $20 from 10.00am-3.00pm on Saturday 29 March at the Cowes Cultural Centre. Owners will also be able to register or re-register their pet at the same time.
"Micro-chipping gives your pet permanent identification, so it can be returned if it wanders or is lost," explained Deb Amor, Senior Local Laws Officer with Bass Coast Shire Council. "A simple chip the size of a grain of rice could save your pet’s life and save you a lot of heartache if your pet goes missing."
A microchip is a tiny electronic transponder that is implanted in an animal using a simple and painless procedure. The procedure takes seconds and does not require anesthesia. The microchip contains a unique identification number. Once implanted into the animal, the microchip remains inactive until read with a scanner.
The use of a microchip allows the ID number to be stored permanently inside the animal, just under the skin," said Deb. "Unlike an external pet tag, the chip cannot be lost, altered or become worn and unreadable.
Pet registration is due by 11 April 2003. Owners who have already registered their pet will receive a reminder notice to re-register in the coming weeks. Owners can also register their pet at the micro-chipping day. "If you would like an inexpensive way of ensuring your pet can always be identified, come along to the micro-chipping day on Saturday 29 March at the Cowes Cultural Centre," said Deb.
