Thanks To The People Of Dargo

Letter to the editor – Gippsland Times, Bairnsdale Advertiser & Gippsland Farmer

By DSE/CFA - 24th February 2003 - Back to News

I want to thank the community of Dargo on behalf of Heyfield Fire District Staff and all firefighting crews (DSE and CFA).

The people of Dargo opened their doors and welcomed us with the trust and assistance of a true rural community. Their good spirits and unstinting support of our efforts during a long campaign was greatly appreciated.

Without complaint they stepped up during this difficult and trying time to feed and accommodate our people to the extent of even giving up their own beds in their homes. Residents worked tirelessly like the firefighters, some up early to prepare breakfasts, others working late to feed crews after midnight. Some worked through the night to supply fuel or first aid assistance.

Working alongside the honest and generous people of Dargo was a very positive experience for all of us.

The Bogong fire has been contained north of Dargo, and we all hope will not burn any closer. DSE firefighters are now changing their focus from wildfire control to rehabilitation. We will continue to be present in Dargo for several weeks.

Yours sincerely,

Laurie Jeremiah

Fire Management Officer and Controller

DSE Heyfield
