Latrobe Local News: New Animal Impounding Facility openedNew animal impounding facility to house impounded animals. By Latrobe City Council - 5th March 2001 - Back to News Tell us your opinion See what others have said Latrobe City Council has opened a new animal impounding facility in Morwell, to house animals impounded by Council’s Local Laws Officers.
In welcoming the Honourable Keith Hamilton in his capacity of Minister for Agriculture, and RSPCA Municipal Liaison Officer, Peter Brown, to the opening of the facility, Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Tony Hanning, said a state- of-the-art facility had been built, which not only met animal husbandry requirements, but led the way for other municipalities to follow.
“Designed to accommodate a maximum of 14 dogs and 18 cats, the facility has been specifically designed with animal health and feeding in mind,” Cr Hanning said.
“A Veterinary Room forms part of the facility, which goes beyond the present requirements for a facility of this nature. However, Council anticipates eventual changes to the State legislation, currently being proposed by animal welfare authorities, and has acted now, rather than have to meet new standards at additional cost to ratepayers later on,” Cr Hanning explained.
“It would be nice for there to be little need for a facility such as this. If all pets were registered, and pet owners were more responsible, there would only be the odd occasion such as when a gate was accidentally left open, that an animal could stray and would need to be impounded.
“Unfortunately, animals are sometimes deliberately abandoned by callous owners, and some pets remain unregistered and thus their owners can’t be identified; so the need for a facility like this is very real.
“Pet ownership is a responsibility that should only be taken on by citizens prepared to properly look after an animal for its lifetime; and part of that responsibility is registration of the animal with Council,” Cr Hanning concluded.
