The announcement was made by Robert Olsen, Chairman of Esso Australia and Dr Malcolm Garratt, Vice President External Affairs, BHP Billiton Petroleum before an invited audience including Council and local community dignitaries, and fellow sponsors at the nearby Gippsland Art Gallery.

Also partnering the Council in the project is the Victorian Government, through Arts Victoria and the Community Support Fund along with businesses and individuals in the local community.

Welcoming the Esso and BHP Billiton sponsorship on behalf of the Shire, Wellington Mayor Malcolm Hole said it was great to see these companies strengthening their involvement in the local community in this way.

"These are companies which already play a major part in the Wellington community and economy and we’re very pleased to have them on board with this exciting initiative.

"This new centre will provide a focal point for entertainment, the performing arts and events in Wellington and the Gippsland region, and will be equipped to host anything from theatre to live concerts, exhibitions, functions and conferences.

"The sense of partnership that is driving the project forward is fantastic and it’s great to see State and local Government, businesses of every size and individuals all coming together to ensure delivery of this major community asset".

The ceremony included the presentation of a $350,000 joint cheque to the Shire from Esso and BHP Billiton.

"Esso and BHP Billiton are delighted to have partnered with the Shire to become principal sponsors of the new entertainment centre. The creation of this wonderful new arts performance centre fits extremely well with our focus on providing increased community access to the arts.  We are confident the entertainment centre will bring joy to the members of the Wellington community." said Robert Olsen, Chairman, Esso Australia.

The centre is due to be completed in spring this year. Regular updates on its progress can be found on the Wellington Shire Council website at www.wellington.vic.gov.au
