Final works completed on Morwell River Road BridgeFinal rehabilitation works have been completed on the Morwell River Road Bridge near Radburns Road, south of Boolarra. By Latrobe City - 24th January 2003 - Back to News Final rehabilitation works have been completed on the Morwell River Road Bridge near Radburns Road, south of Boolarra.
The bridge rehabilitation works involved replacing the existing timber bridge deck with a reinforced concrete deck, and replacing the existing timber bridge barrier with a steel beam guard fence. The works which were managed by Latrobe City Council, were funded through the Federal Government’s Roads to Recovery Program.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Tony Hanning, said the rehabilitation works were timely, providing a safer environment for forestry traffic, local residents and visitors.
"The existing single-span timber decked bridge was constructed in 1959 and designed for 30 ton trucks, whereas bridges today are designed for much larger contemporary vehicles of 44 tonnes. The existing bridge had a white ant infestation in the timber deck which required the deck to be replaced, so rehabilitating the structure and upgrading it to meet current standards was the most appropriate option," Cr Hanning explained.
Acting Manager, Infrastructure Maintenance, Richard Brammall, said the bridge had been strengthened using a method termed ‘composite design’. where a reinforced concrete bridge deck is poured on site and used to strengthen the RSJ beams.
"The existing RSJ beams were abrasively blasted and then painted with a zinc-in-silicate primer to extend their life, before the concrete was poured. While the City’s contractor, DN McInnes Pty Ltd, poured the reinforced concrete bridge deck in late October, a month was needed for the concrete to cure before the bridge could be reopened to traffic. Final work installing the steel beam guard fence has now been completed on the bridge, and it has also been installed on the bridge approaches," Mr Brammall said.
