Microchip Your Pet For Just $20Permanent identification to save heartache By Carol McCormack - 11th December 2002 - Back to News Bass Coast Shire Council and Trovan will hold a Micro-chipping Day on Saturday 11 January 2003 from 10am – 3pm at the Bass Coast Agricultural Show in Wonthaggi.
"For only $20 people can have their pet micro-chipped," said Deb Amor, Senior Local Laws Officer with Council.
"Micro-chipping means that your pet has permanent identification, so it can be returned if it wanders or is lost," explained Deb. "A simple chip the size of a grain of rice could save your pet’s life and save you a lot of heartache if your pet goes missing."
A microchip is a tiny electronic transponder that is implanted in an animal using a simple and painless procedure. The procedure takes seconds and does not require anesthesia. The microchip contains a unique identification number. Once implanted into the animal, the microchip remains inactive until read with a scanner.
The use of a microchip allows the ID number to be stored permanently inside the animal, just under the skin," said Deb. "Unlike an external pet tag, the chip cannot be lost, altered or become worn and unreadable.
"If you would like an inexpensive way of ensuring your pet can always be identified, come along to the micro-chipping day on Saturday 11 January at the Wonthaggi Recreation Reserve," she said.
