Gippsland Rugby League capped off the season holding their 12th Annual Presentation Awards Dinner at Ryan’s Balcony last weekend that was well represented by sponsors, players and members of the Melbourne Rugby League clubs. This marked the first for "Wildcats" announcing Best & Fairest, Players Awards, acknowledging recognition of all Volunteers.

Rob Wright & Mark Strini were presented with their Life Membership medallions acknowledging their long standing contribution to rugby league in Gippsland. Wright is well known to the rugby league ranks coming on board as referee from 1991 to 2001 and GRL President from 1994 to 1996. Strini was nominated for his contribution as Player/President/Treasurer for Hazelwood Eels from 1992 until the merge with Morwell in 1998 and as GRL President from 1997 to 2001.

The Vote Count presented a tough battlefield with a five-point difference between the winner and second place with the Best & Fairest, sponsored by Ryan’s Hotel going to Reno Sobari on 36 points. David Noda ran in second on 31 points with Jared Hiriaki, third on 27 points.

The player awards recipients were David Noda, Best Back, sponsored by Commercial Hotel, Glengarry and Jared Hiriaki, Best Forward, sponsored by Network Video. Dwayne Noda, Highest Try Scorer sponsored by Ryan’s Hotel and Players’ Player elected by players during the course of the season. Anthony Huxford having switched from rugby union received Best 1st Year Player, sponsored by Bushies Bakery & Pizza. Coach selected awards recipients were Mana Makiakama for Most Improved sponsored by Ryan’s Hotel and Mark McRae received the Coaches Award sponsored by Sandra Pollutro. Jo Cisk and David Noda received the Achievement Award acknowledging their participation at the Inaugural Open States tournament held in Adelaide early this year.

GRL Executives will be meeting with Victorian Rugby League officials within the next two weeks for further discussions to the resurrection of a local competition for next season at the same time discussions will also be held to the formation of the Gippsland Junior Rugby League committee. Finally, GRL will be holding their AGM on Sunday 24th November, 1:00pm at Ryan’s Hotel.
