Gippsland Rugby League NewsInsider Knowledge On The Gippsland Wildcats 23/09/02 By Kiri Hiriaki - 23rd September 2002 - Back to News Gippsland Rugby League hosted the Melbourne Rugby League Semi Finals early this month at Maryvale Recreation Reserve, Morwell that should have seen Wildcats (fifth place) taking the field due to the late withdrawal of Waverley Panthers.
MRL Executives having classed the withdrawal as a forfeit reduced any chance for Wildcats to field the best side of the Reserve Grade leaving GRL Executives outraged at the missed opportunity. Certainly, questions will be raised at the next division meeting however league executives have forwarded their protest.
With one match less this saw St. Kilda Saints reserve grade straight through to the preliminary final to play Ballarat Highlanders with Altona Roosters heading to the grand finals.
Doveton Steelers senior grade faced trauma leading up to the semi-finals with the untimely passing of their coach however, on the day, the came through defeating Waverley Panthers. Doveton Steelers to play Altona Roosters with St. Kilda Saints going directly to the finals.
The Preliminary finals was no surprise as the two oldest clubs in the Melbourne Rugby League division Altona Roosters and St. Kilda Saints senior and reserve grade will play off in the grand finals.
Altona Roosters & St. Kilda Saints showed no mercy towards each other, as rivalry was rife dating back many years vying for a huge cash prize for both grades. Weather conditions were perfect during the first half of the reserve grade then a change of blistering wind that lasted the entire day hindered play for both sides with St. Kilda Saints defeating Altona Roosters in both grades.
In other news, Gippsland Rugby League are holding a ‘hangi’ as a fundraiser with proceeds going towards Wildcats 2003 on Sunday, 29th September, 2:00PM at Ryan’s Hotel. Tickets are limited and pre-sold by Friday, 27th September, costs $7 Adult, $3.50 Children (under 10).
