Insider Knowledge On The Gippsland Wildcats 11/08/02

By Kiri Hiriaki - 13th August 2002 - Back to News

Gippsland Wildcats dominated Doveton Steelers at Betula Reserve, Doveton last Sunday with a convincing win over Doveton 52/26.

Wildcats were never deterred with the fact that the Steelers boasted the majority of players from their senior squad as this was evident from the start given no match were scheduled for them (seniors). It was a hard-hitting match with tough exchanges from both sides equalling in numbers where the patience of Wildcats paid off.

Within five minutes of the first half after a ball spillage by Steelers, Wildcats backs were put to the test with the Noda twins placing the first six points on the scoreboard. Thereafter Wildcats went on a scoring rampage as they notched up five tries with four converted right up to the twenty-eighth minute of the game. With only four minutes remaining to half time Steelers ran in to score the only converted try for this half with Wildcats leading 34/6.

Wildcats came back on the field with renewed conviction to put Doveton Steelers out of their misery scoring four points within three minutes of the second half. Just minutes later, another converted try put Wildcats well and truly in the lead. In response, Steelers decided to come back into the game scoring three tries, two converted just three minutes apart. A temporary setback for Wildcats when playmakers Colin and Dwayne Noda ruled out for the remainder of the match due to injury however Wildcats found enthusiasm coming back into the play to score two unconverted tries. With the hard exchanges and an interchange of passes this was the opportunity for Steelers to run in over the line scoring the last four points for the day. Wildcats domination over Steelers gave them a commanding win defeating Steelers 52/26.

Wildcats would need to maintain patience, but with home ground advantage, they should come off on top when they play Cranbourne Redbacks at Harold Preston Park, Traralgon on Sunday 18th August with a 1.00PM kick-off.
