Insider Knowledge On The Gippsland Wildcats 8/7/02

By Kiri Hiriaki - 9th July 2002 - Back to News

This was to be the match of the round with Wildcats and Moorabbin Raiders equal on the ladder. After last weeks forfeit by Doveton Steelers, it came as no surprise when Wildcats defeated Raiders 42/18.

With high expectations from both teams and also their first encounter between each other, the first half showed lack of ball retention. Too many times the ball spilled changing hands from one team to the other but after Wildcats second completion this was the beginning of a scoring rampage with the try converted. As expected, Raiders retaliated busting Wildcats defence to score two tries (one converted) as Wildcats take the lead before half time 20/10.

The second half was by no means similar to that of the first however errors from Wildcats provided Raiders with the means to score two unconverted tries, the only two tries for the rest of the match for Raiders. Whilst the exchanges were tough it did no deter Wildcats from doing the damage. With two players sent to the sin bin, one from each teams, this provided Wildcats the opportunity to display their skills to score four tries with two conversions.

This Sunday, Wildcats will travel to Elwood Reserve, St. Kilda to play Saints with a 1pm kick off. The bus will leave Ryan’s Hotel car park at 9:00am.

Meanwhile the trivia night held last Friday was a huge success. Many thanks to those who supported the night and especially our sponsor, Ryan’s Hotel.
