Grey Street surfacing to be completed in March

Latrobe City Council has announced that asphalt surfacing to complete the roadworks in Grey Street Traralgon will be undertaken in March

By Latrobe City Council - 13th December 2001 - Back to News

Latrobe City Council has announced that asphalt surfacing to complete the roadworks in Grey Street Traralgon, between Breed and Norman Streets, will be undertaken in March.

Latrobe City Group Manager Engineering Services, Larry Naismith, said the asphalt surfacing had been rescheduled by VicRoads until March to ensure the work was completed to a satisfactory standard.

"The existing new surface in Grey Street requires an extended period of hot weather to ensure that all the volatile components in the seal, such as kerosene, have evaporated," Mr Naismith explained.

"If the hot mix asphalt overlay is applied to the current Grey Street surface at this time, the asphalt may soften in ensuing hot weather, which could cause trucks to leave wheel ruts in the asphalt.

"Also, the risk of bitumen bleeding through the asphalt overlay and forming puddles of bitumen on the surface of the asphalt will be minimised by deferring the works to March," Mr Naismith said.

Mr Naismith said that in the meantime, asphalt ramps had been constructed at adjacent residents driveways to make access from the present surface smoother, and residents had been advised by letter that the asphalt works would be delayed.

"While there will be a longer than anticipated wait before the roadworks are concluded, once the surfacing is completed in March, local residents and other road users will have a much smoother ride along Grey Street," Mr Naismith concluded.
