Santa’s Workshop now gearing up for Christmas 2002 With less than two weeks to Christmas, the manufacture of Christmas Decorations at Santa’s Workshop in Morwell for this Christmas, has reached the final stages. By Latrobe City Council - 13th December 2001 - Back to News With less than two weeks to Christmas, the manufacture of Christmas Decorations at Santa’s Workshop in Morwell for this Christmas, has reached the final stages.
However, when the presents have all been opened, and the last spoonful of Christmas Pudding has disappeared from the plate, and most of us think Christmas is over for another year, work at Santa’s Workshop is just about to commence again.
Producing decorations for Christmas 2002 starts early in the New Year, with six Work for the DOLE participants currently engaged in a six-month employment program.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins said additional funding had been made available to the Moe, Morwell, Churchill and Traralgon township associations recently, to use the creative resources provided through Santa’s Workshop and the Work for the DOLE participants, to manufacture Christmas decorations for 2001 and 2002.
Workshop Coordinator, Keith Peters, said that Christmas scenes such as Santas, reindeer, nativity scenes, elves, stars and sleighs are drawn onto base-boards, cut out and then painted. "The finished items are then used by the community groups to decorate their towns," Mr Peters said.
"While it’s too late in the year to produce more decorations for this Christmas, the Work for the DOLE participants are now working on producing decorations for next year. I would urge those groups who require decorations for Christmas 2002, who haven’t yet notified their requirements, to place their orders as soon as possible so that we can begin manufacturing," Mr Peters said.
Mr Peters said that Work for the DOLE project complemented the ongoing community initiative where people work together sharing their skills, to create Christmas decorations, substantially using materials donated by local businesses.
"Once again the community has taken advantage of Santa’s Workshop to create their own Christmas decorations. It’s a great place for ideas, inspiration and materials to make large Christmas decorations for the outside of your home," Mr Peters said.
"Some of the materials used by the community have been donated, such as some paint, and the timber from which we’ve built easels to work from. The Morwell Lions have been very helpful with support, and Council has provided the building. Some people who first come here are doubtful about their artistic capabilities, but we provide stencils and advice, and in no time they discover how creative they can be.
"People generally use the decorations they create in conjunction with outdoor lighting displays in their gardens, on verandahs, or sometimes on walls or the roof; and their displays are viewed by thousands of people who tour the streets to look at Christmas lights. Their work brings a great del of joy to a lot of people," Mr Peters added.
Santa’s Workshop is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10am – 4pm at the former Morwell East Pre-school, Vincent Road, Morwell.
