The Victorian State Government has allocated a grant of $4,230 to the Latrobe City Library Service to present information sessions for its non-English speaking community.
In presenting a cheque for the grant to Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, the Member for Morwell, Mr Keith Hamilton, said the Bracks Government’s ‘Changing Communities, Changing Libraries’ program provided support to library services so that they remained functional, accessible and responsive to contemporary needs.
"This announcement is another example of the Bracks Government’s commitment to assisting local government deliver quality library services throughout Victoria. It reflects our determination to provide all Victorians with free and equitable access to library resources," Mr Hamilton said.
In welcoming the grant, Cr Jenkins said a series of library workshops would be presented to selected multi-cultural groups from the Latrobe Community. "These workshops will promote the resources available at the library and also promote the diverse cultural heritage within our community," Cr Jenkins said.
"The workshops are intended to reflect the information needs of Latrobe citizens in a global community. They provide a recognition and reinforcement of the unique cultural heritage of this community, while also recognising the social value of the library service, and encouraging literacy and language skills development," Cr Jenkins said.
"Access to information through public libraries is becoming increasingly important, and though the means of delivering today’s information is ever changing, our library service is keeping pace with those changes, so that we meet the expanding information needs of our citizens, Cr Jenkins said.
"There are exciting initiatives being undertaken to enhance Latrobe’s library service by providing new library facilities in Traralgon and Morwell as part of the corporate headquarters project, and this all bodes well for delivering an even higher level of service to library users in the future," Cr Jenkins concluded.
