Temporary road closure for Newborough roundabout worksParts of Old Sale Road and Southwell Avenue, in Newborough, will be closed to traffic between Monday 17 December 2001 and Friday, 18 January 2002. By Latrobe City Council - 13th December 2001 - Back to News Parts of Old Sale Road and Southwell Avenue, in Newborough, will be closed to traffic between Monday 17 December 2001 and Friday, 18 January 2002.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, said the road closure would facilitate the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Old Sale Road and Southwell Avenue, which is recognised as a notorious black-spot where a number of accidents have occurred.
"The new roundabout and additional adjacent traffic management work will improve safety and amenity for all road users and pedestrian at the intersection. At times the intersection can get quite busy, with traffic bound for local schools, sports facilities and the Moe Newborough Sports Centre, together with residential traffic and commuter and commercial traffic plying between Moe and Newborough," Cr Jenkins said.
"In order that the roadworks are completed as quickly as possible Council has agreed to close the intersection to non-emergency traffic for the period Monday 17 December 2001 to Friday 18 January 2002.
"School will have finished for the year, and a number of workers will be taking holidays, so traffic volumes will be at their minimum, particularly in the New Year. However, we recognise that the road closures may cause some temporary inconvenience for residents, particularly in North Newborough. Local residents have been notified by mail, and Council staff will ensure adequate detour arrangements are made.
"I would urge those who use Old Sale Road to travel between Moe and Newborough or Yallourn North on a regular basis, to bypass the roadworks via Narracan Drive or Thompsons Road, avoiding the need to make detours via local streets.
"While we regret the inconvenience, I am sure the end result will be worth the short term inconvenience, by providing a much safer environment for the community at the intersection in the future," Cr Jenkins concluded.
Further information on the road closure and detours are available from Ray Bight at Latrobe City, telephone 1300 367 700.
