Festival of the Southern Ocean Students at the parade at the Mallacoota Festival of the Southern Ocean GippsTAFE’s Certificate IV Koorie Arts students recently participated in the Mallacoota Festival of the Southern Ocean By Eimear McNelis - 30th April 2002 - Back to News This year’s festival titled "Collide-a-Scope 2002" had a special focus on the idea of tolerance for, and exploration of a range of perspectives, and featured theatre, dance, music and visual arts.
Koorie students participated in a community art exhibition and also took part in the festival parade.
The students worked in the arts workshops making props for the parade, including one large didgeridoo by Brett Clark assisted by Thelma Harrison, and four colourful shields carried and designed by Eileen, Beverly, Emily and Leila Harrison.
Over the five days the students completed a range of learning outcomes for their course such as sketching plans for shapes and 2 dimensional designs, painting on 3 dimensional surfaces, concept design, armature construction, and covering and finishing forms.
Peter Corser from the GippsTAFE Koorie Unit said that all students enjoyed being in the parade and as a result will be more confident about their capacity to participate in other community parades.
GippsTAFE’s Koorie Unit offers a Certificate III and IV in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Art and Design.
The course provides students with skills in producing and selling their own art and crafts.
