Height Of Weed Season Highlighted During The Silly Season

The advent of the so called ‘silly season’ tends to also mark the height of the weed season. Take a look around your paddocks and roadsides and you’ll discover many weeds are now in flower.

By Latrobe City Council - 12th December 2006 - Back to News

Pest plant coordinator for Latrobe City Council and Central Latrobe Landcare Network, Chris Rankin, said it is currently easy to identify those weeds that need to be eradicated and to take action. "Ragwort, blackberry and Paterson’s curse are all currently in flower and are easy to spot at this time of the year," Mr Rankin suggested.

Mr Rankin said that roadside weeds are a particular problem and landholders are best placed to control weeds on the roadside adjoining their property.

"It is also worth remembering that weeds don’t recognise a fence or property boundary - if they are on one side of a fence this year, chances are they will be on the other side next year.

"Just remember the old adage that one year’s seeds equals ten year’s weeds," Mr Rankin said.

"For property owners who have land that is difficult to access, it is possible to organise aerial spraying by helicopter," Mr Rankin added.

"Spraying weeds with an appropriate herbicide at the right time can significantly reduce weed infestations across the region. We would encourage all landholders to take responsibility for the weeds on their property and to take action against them now," Mr Rankin concluded.
