Liberals To Oppose Bracks’ Hasty Ban On Alpine Grazing The Liberal Party will support the mountain cattlemen when it votes against the National Park (Alpine National Park Grazing) Bill in Parliament’s Legislative Assembly this week. By Philp Davis - 15th June 2005 - Back to News Shadow Minister for Agriculture Philip Davis said the Liberal Party supported the mountain cattlemen’s fight to retain cattle grazing in the Alpine National Park and would vote against the Bracks Government’s rushed legislation.
"The Liberal Party is opposed to Labor’s Bill that will cancel mountain cattlemen’s alpine grazing licenses," Mr Davis said.
"We fully support the mountain cattlemen’s tradition and heritage of grazing stock in the high country as they have done for the past 170 years."
Mr Davis said last week’s rally on Parliament, organised by Country Voice, sent a clear message to Steve Bracks that country Victorians are fed up with Labor’s blatant neglect.
But the fight is not over.
"The Liberal Party will oppose this legislation at every opportunity," Mr Davis said.
"The Bracks Government’s treatment of the mountain cattlemen and discarding their 170 year heritage is a disgrace.
"The affects of this decision will be felt through generations of high country families in years to come – long after Steve Bracks and his cronies have faded from memory.
"But the Liberal Party is determined that despite the Bracks Government’s best efforts, the symbolism of our heritage of the mountain cattlemen grazing the high country will not be lost forever and will overturn the ban in government."
Mr Davis said mountain cattlemen will be present at Parliament this week, pressing their point with Members of Parliament, lobbying in the corridors and urging Labor members to change their position.
He said the cattlemen would be present in the chambers of Parliament, listening to the debate and watching their 170 years of heritage being sold out by Labor Premier Steve Bracks, who owes his Premiership to country Victoria.
