Phillip Island to benefit from gaming machine fundsThe Phillip Island community will be the beneficiary of over $140,300 in funds from losses on electronic gaming machines. By news@gippsland - 25th May 2016 - Back to News The Phillip Island community will be the beneficiary of over $140,300 in funds from losses on electronic gaming machines.
Following a decision at the May Ordinary Meeting, Bass Coast Shire Council will administer the Phillip Island Community Benefit Fund (PICBF) to the Phillip Island Community. The funds are from the Continental Hotel in Cowes.
In 2013, the Continental Hotel, which had 27 electronic gaming machines, went into receivership.
A Section 173 Agreement exists between the owners of the establishment and Council that stipulates funds of $34,000 per year (plus accruing CPI) be allocated to legally incorporated not-for-profit organisations or groups on Phillip Island by the owners. The funds have not been allocated to the Phillip Island community since 2012.
Thompson Ward Councillor, Andrew Phillips, said there is a Gaming Management Plan Code of Conduct that makes special stipulations about the distribution of funds.
"The funds will be distributed through a funding round running parallel with the Council’s first Community Grants funding round for 2017, which will be assessed in March next year," Cr Phillips said.
"Funds will be offered in amounts from $5,000 up to $25,000 for specified projects.
"Whilst the funding pool is substantial, we expect that applications for funds will be competitive and applicants will be required to meet eligibility and assessment criteria as part of their application."
An application process for distribution of the PICBF is being established and will be similar to the Bass Coast Shire Council Community Grants process.
Application guidelines, including eligibility requirements and information sessions, will be made available prior to applications being invited from September 2016 to March 2017.
