The exhibition, The Shape of Things: Selections and Reflections 1982-2011 by Dan Wollmering is a unique exploration of how an artist develops materials and themes over time.

Latrobe City’s arts director, Julie Adams, said that the gallery was delighted to be hosting the exhibition, as the artist has a connection to the local area.

"Although Dan is now based in Melbourne, he spent a number of years living and working in the Latrobe Valley and he has drawn ongoing inspiration from the time he spent in this region. The shapes and forms of the built and natural environment of the Latrobe Valley seem to be suggested in his work. There is a sense of rolling hills as well as cooling towers and large fabricated structures, all reminiscent of our region," Ms Adams said.

"The exhibition also represents Dan’s long-standing interest in wood as a material and demonstrates various techniques of construction, assemblage and carving. The works have a diversity of treatment of surface. Many have been painted in bold colours that emphasise the form of the work adding to the overall sense of playfulness and fun in the exhibition.

"We are pleased to announce that the exhibition will be formally opened by the artist’s mentor, Professor Emeritus Barbara van Ernst AM, on Friday 19 August at 6pm. Everyone is welcome to attend," Ms Adams explained.
