International Day Of People With Disability

Bass Coast Shire Council will be joining in worldwide celebrations, showcasing the contribution people with a disability make to society.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 3rd November 2008 - Back to News

International Day of People with Disability will be launched at Guide Park in Wonthaggi on Wednesday 3 December, featuring live music, an award ceremony, sports demonstrations and art displays.

Along with the launch, a number of other events are being held across Bass Coast throughout the first week of December, including celebrations in Corinella, Phillip Island and Inverloch. Details will be released in the coming weeks.

Council’s RuralAccess Worker, Cathy Giliam, said the aim of the week was to promote awareness of the contributions people with disability make to the community and in everyday activities.

"People with disability contribute to our community everyday in many ways," Miss Giliam said.

"They are volunteers, employees, friends and neighbours. Research shows that people with disability are more loyal, reliable and longer term then other volunteers or employees."

International Day of People with Disability was established in 1992 by the United Nations General Assembly.

It is celebrated worldwide on 3 December where people with disability, non-government organisations, businesses, all levels of government and the wider community unite to celebrate the achievements of people with disability.

"With one in five Australians experiencing some degree of disability, it is vital that these achievements and contributions are promoted and acknowledged," Miss Giliam said.

If you would like to participate in and/or contribute to the local events, please contact Cathy Giliam on 1300BCOAST (226 278) for more information. If you are deaf or hard of hearing, please call the National Relay Service on 133 677.
