Have Your Say On Latrobe City’S Draft International Relations Plan

Latrobe City residents will be able to influence the future of the City’s International Relations program after Council, last night, resolved to release for public comment the draft 2011-2014 International Relations Plan.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Darrell White, encouraged members of the community to have their say in order that the draft plan is well understood by the community and has captured community expectations.

"The Latrobe City International Relations Committee, which comprises Councillors, Council officers, key industry stakeholders and members of the community, has already been widely consulted and has undertaken a comprehensive review of the 2007-2010 International Relations Plan in creating the 2011-2014 draft plan.

"However, we also want members of the public to be able to voice their opinions too.

"It’s important that we capture as much feedback as possible to ensure the draft plan places Latrobe City in the best position to take advantage of a well-developed international relations program," Cr White said.

Chair of the International Relations Committee, Cr Lisa Price, said that Latrobe City had built solid relationships through its sister city arrangements.

"We would like to expand on these relationships with the City of Takasago in Japan, and the City of Taizhou in China, with the intention to explore other opportunities. This draft plan gives clear direction to Latrobe City’s commitment in the areas of international exchanges and cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, science and technology, culture, education, sports, health and people," Cr Price said.

Cr White added that the draft International Relations Plan was intended to promote goodwill, friendship, and an understanding and exchanging of ideas at a cultural level.

"We can learn from our international neighbours and we can share our knowledge too, and with the community’s feedback we can tailor this draft plan to achieve socially and economically beneficial outcomes," Cr White concluded.

Written submissions in relation to the draft 2011-2014 International Relations Plan will be received until 31 March 2011. During this time, copies of the draft 2011-2014 International Relations Plan will be available upon request from all Latrobe City service centres and on the ‘Have a Say’ page on Council’s website.
