Sacred Heart Primary School Artwork On Display

Artwork by grade five and six students from Morwell’s Sacred Heart Primary School is the latest to be displayed as part of the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre Foyer Exhibition program in Traralgon.

By Latrobe City Council - 16th September 2009 - Back to News

The newest exhibition is the first to showcase artwork done by primary school students, previously high school students have had their work displayed.

The exhibition, which will run until the end of September, displays a diverse range of works on paper, produced by young artists.

Latrobe City’s coordinator of performing arts and venues, Kathleen Roberts said the exhibition, called ‘Art Appreciation’ was selected from works developed by the students.

"The aim of the foyer exhibition is to showcase the artwork of talented, young local students and offers a wonderful opportunity for their work to be displayed in public," Ms Roberts said.

"The artwork on display explores different themes, which are represented in the work displayed at the exhibition, the artwork is a lively and colourful display, and a wonderful addition to entrance of our facility," Ms Roberts said.

Students from the school drew inspiration from artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Ken Done, John Brack and Vincent Van Gough.

"The themes explored by students saw them look at Da Vinci’s ‘Mona Lisa’, Van Gough’s ‘A Corridor in the Asylum’, as well as beach scenes inspired by popular Australian artist Done, and Brack’s pencil people," Ms Roberts said.

"Children see things differently to adults, so through their eyes and imagination these various topics were able to become colourful and playful, as the students play with the use of collage, paint, and colour," Ms Roberts concluded.

Sacred Heart Primary School art teacher, Cathy Colaciello, said students were able to turn the art into an educational yet creative experience.

"The students studied Leonardo Da Vinci’s life, his diverse talents in art, science and physics and explored these elements as part of Italian studies. His painting, ‘Mona Lisa’ was re-drawn by the students in their own individual styles," Ms Colaciello said.

"By using real art and artists from across the ages there was a real opportunity to make it relevant to other subject areas, while still making it a creative experience for the students," Ms Colaciello said.

Exhibitions incorporated in the Foyer Exhibition Program will be on view during the operating hours of the Box Office: Monday to Friday 10am - 5pm.
