Work set to start on Rosedale Community Centre as funding target reachedBy Wellington Shire Council - 19th April 2005 - Back to News Wellington Shire Council is delighted to announce that it has now reached the $2.5 million funding target for the much-needed new Rosedale Multipurpose Community Centre, which will be marked with a sod cutting ceremony on-site on Friday 29 April.
The final funding element just announced is $250,000 from the Victorian Government under its Living Libraries Program, for construction of the library component of the centre. It means that construction work on the new complex is all set to start in June, with completion due autumn 2006.
This latest news comes after comprehensive lobbying by the council on the community’s behalf to obtain substantial funding for the community centre project from the various spheres of government. It takes total Victorian Government funding for the project to $1 million, which includes $300,000 in Community Support Grant funding, $250,000 through the Department of Human Services Children’s Services and $200,000 from the Small Towns Program.
The Federal Government has provided $750,000 through its Regional Solutions and Regions Partnerships Programs, while Wellington Shire Council has contributed $680,000, Central Gippsland Health Service has given $80,000 for the community health element of the project and the local community has raised some $20,000.
To mark the funding milestone, a joint-turning of the first sod on the site of the centre will be carried out at 9am on Friday 29 April by the Federal Member for Gippsland Peter McGauran and the State MP for Morwell District, Brendan Jenkins - on behalf of the Hon John Thwaites MP, Minister for Victorian Communities. Amongst those also attending will be Wellington’s Mayor Peter Gault.
The Rosedale Multipurpose Community Centre will boast provision for occasional care and pre-school, a library, neighbourhood house and community health services, as well as facilities for local senior citizens and other community groups.
It means that for the first time the people of Rosedale will be able to benefit from all these services under one roof – providing much more convenient access to broader range of community support.
Said Mayor Gault: "This is a great result for the people of Rosedale and owes much to the hard work and commitment of everyone involved including the Rosedale community itself, local parliamentarians and council officers who pulled this complex initiative together.
"We can now look forward to construction work on site moving into full swing in the coming weeks."
