Latrobe City libraries say turn off the TV and pick up a book this summer

As US comedian, Groucho Marx, succinctly put it "I find television very educational. The minute somebody turns it on, I go to the library and read a good book."

The Summer Read is on again at Latrobe City libraries, meaning it’s time to turn off the TV and tune into a great Victorian book.

The annual Summer Read is run by the State Library of Victoria in partnership with the Public Libraries Victoria Network and celebrates the diversity of Victorian writing by encouraging Victorians to enjoy and discuss books over summer. Books listed this year are either written by a Victorian author, or set in Victoria, and are free to borrow from participating public libraries throughout the state.

State Library Summer Read coordinator, Susan McLaine, explained that the program gives Victorians some great stories to enjoy over summer - a time when television programming is often at its worst.

"Summer is generally a terrible time for television but we don’t have to put up with reruns and B-grade movies. There’s an endless number of amazing stories to be read and summer really is a great time to enjoy them," Ms McLaine said.

Latrobe City coordinator libraries, Debbie Skinner, added that the Summer Read contains books to suit all interests.

"The books are ‘Animal Kingdom: a crime story, Stephen Sewell’; ‘Below the Styx, Michael Meehan’; ‘Book of Lost Threads, Tess Evans’; ‘The Diggers Rest Hotel, Geoffrey McGeachin’; Flying with Paper Wings, Sandy Jeffs’; Into the Woods: the battle for Tasmania's forests, Anna Krien’; ‘Piano Lessons, Anna Goldsworthy’; Rocks in the Belly, Jon Bauer’; The Sleepers Almanac no. 6, anthology’; and ‘Stealing Picasso, Anson Cameron’.

"The State Library of Victoria is also running a great competition with the winner set to take home 50 books! Information on both the competition and listed books is available at www.slv.vic.gov.au/event/summer-read-2011," Ms Skinner concluded.
