By Wellington Shire Council - 29th August 2007 - Back to News

The workshop was organised by Wellington Shire Council with the aim of ensuring that there was a medium to long term development plan for Licola.

Wellington Shire Council Chief Executive Officer, Mr Lyndon Webb, said a major goal was too ensure that recovery efforts in Licola were co-ordinated and took account of the long term future of the area.

"There are many authorities and organisations active in restoring access and services in Licola," said Mr Webb.

"We wanted to ensure that this effort had long term as well as immediate benefits."

"We are pleased that we had genuine input from genuine players in this workshop. This is just what we wanted," said Mr Webb.

Residents, businesses and authorities active in Licola were represented at the workshop.

A list of priorities developed and work-shopped by the group will provide the foundation for a future plan for the Licola area.

Three urgent matters identified for immediate and short term attention were: the rehabilitation of rivers and riverbanks, clear determination by authorities on the ownership and management of the Tamboritha Road, and compensation for land and property owners adversely affected by fire and flood.

A community plan to be developed by a working group from the meeting will also progress issues of service delivery, public land management, capital works, tourism promotion, community development initiatives and future investment for the region.

The working group of 20 volunteers will assess a plan drafted as an outcome of the workshop.

"Everyone who attended the workshop is invited to reconvene at a second planning day at Licola towards the end of September to approve the community plan," said Mr Webb.

"We are very happy with the outcome of this public consultation exercise.

"The Licola region is isolated and unique. It is also of strategic importance to the region and the state. It requires appropriate planning," said Mr Webb.
