Community Newsletter Wilsons Prom Fire 12/02/2009 - 1800Hrs

By DSE - 13th February 2009 - Back to News

Fire situation

An observation flight at 4.30 pm reported the Cathedral Range fire had not grown in size, and remains 2850 ha. Small isolated plumes of smoke were observed on the western edge and some visible flame on the northern edge of the fire.

Crew tactics

Planned burns were to begin today, however forecast conditions did not fit within burn prescriptions.

Prom specific weather forecasts predicted stronger winds, varying from south-east to north-east, than initially anticipated. This, combined with elevated fuel moisture readings meant no planned burn operations could take place today.

A helicopter with water bombing capacity (heli-attack) will work upon hot spots recently located on the northern edge of the Cathedral Range fire this afternoon.

Crews are continuing to work upon containment lines. Hygiene protocols have been established to ensure machinery is washed down before, and when moving between locations to prevent the spread of soil pathogens, such as cinnamon fungus.

Natural values staff are working alongside fire crews and machinery operators to ensure sensitive environmental values, such as populations of eastern spider orchid and fire sensitive vegetation, are not impacted upon by containment line construction.

There is no updated map provided with this community newsletter as there has been minimal change to the fire area.
