Section Of Paynesville Community Centre To Be Closed

Part of the Paynesville Community Center faces immediate closure following an inspection by the municipal building surveyor.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 17th August 2006 - Back to News

East Gippsland Shire Council’s manager community building and citizen service Anna Cook said the concrete floor had continued to move over past months and had now reached a critical stage.

"As a result we have to shut the area used by the Childcare Centre and consider re-locating the childcare facility within another part of the building," she said.

Ms Cook said priority was also being given to accommodate other user groups.

"We will be meeting with all affected parties to explain the situation and work out the best ways to address their respective needs," she said.

"There will be some initial inconvenience but every effort will be made to minimise disruptions."

Ms Cook said representatives of the Shire were consulting with the Neighbourhood Centre coordinator and user groups to plan the best solutions for alternative accommodation.

Shire manager projects David Moir said soil subsidence appears to have caused the floor under the childcare section of the building to move.

"Subsequent building movement has created issues," he said.

"We will be conducting a full engineering study to determine the cause of the problem and possible rectification methods and we expect this to take between three and six months to complete."

Mr Moir said a review of the original technical advice would also be conducted.
