National Meals on Wheels Day

Baw Baw Shire Council will be celebrating National Meals on Wheels Day on Wednesday by providing an extra treat for clients.

National Meals on Wheels Day celebrates the contribution Meals on Wheels makes to our community. In Australia, 81,000 volunteers deliver more than 13 million meals annually.

"To mark the day we will be adding a muffin to each meal," says Ms Delwyn Whitworth, Social Support Co-ordinator with the Council.

"While clients appreciate the nutritious meal they get each day, real recognition for Meals on Wheels Day should also go to the volunteers who deliver the meals," says Ms Whitworth.

"Baw Baw Shire Council would like to thank the 550 volunteers who have delivered 25,000 meals in our local community this year."

Meals on Wheels volunteers do more than just deliver meals. The meal delivery helps to decrease the social isolation of recipients and assists in monitoring their health and wellbeing.

Meals on Wheels in Australia were introduced in Victoria in 1953, to enable people to remain independent in their own homes for longer.

"Most people prefer to live at home, but in many cases they need support such as Meals on Wheels and Home and Community Care.

"Meals on Wheels is available to frail, aged people, people with a disability, and their carers; and is not means tested," says Ms Whitworth.

Baw Baw Shire Council is always pleased to recruit new volunteers, and a couple of hours each month is all that is required. For further information about Meals on Wheels please contact: Delwyn Whitworth on 5625 0200
