Wellington wins grants to protect football fields

Wellington Shire Council has won State Government grants totaling nearly $19,000 to help Heyfield and Yarram football clubs protect their playing fields from the impact of extreme, dry conditions.

The Minister for State and Regional Development, John Brumby, has announced the funding under the Government’s Football Grounds Assistance Program, which will be matched on a dollar-for-dollar basis by the council.

Extreme, dry conditions and water restrictions over recent years have resulted in a hard and deteriorating ground surface at both football clubs, which has meant that some matches have had to be played elsewhere.

Heyfield Football Club is to receive a grant of $12,100, which will help with the installation of watering systems at the Heyfield Recreation Reserve, along with re-seeding and other restoration works.

Yarram Football Club will be provided with $6,800 to assist with grass seeding and fertilising, trucking in water, as well as having a pump and sprinkler to spread this water and promote grass growth.

Said Wellington’s Mayor Jeff Amos: "On behalf of the Yarram and Heyfield communities we are delighted with these funding announcements from the Victorian Government. It’s great to receive this financial support, which recognises the fact that football clubs are at the centre of our rural towns and communities and so should be supported in their efforts to continue and thrive."
