Last Week For Pet RegistrationsIs your new kitten or puppy registered with Council? By Bass Coast - 30th March 2012 - Back to News Bass Coast Shire Council’s Community and Economic Development Director, Steven Piasente said registrations for 2012/13 were due by 10 April 2012.
"The owner of any cat or dog three months of age or older is required to register their pet with Council," said Mr Piasente.
This requirement is of the Domestic Animals Act 1994.
"A condition of first time registration is that the kitten or puppy is micro-chipped before you register it. This helps ensure that if you animal is lost that it can easily be returned to the owner.
This law applies throughout Victoria and is part of being a responsible pet owner. There are penalties if owners do not registered their dogs and cats.
Mr Piasente said people who have an existing pet registration will have received a renewal form in the mail. "If you haven’t received your renewal form, please call us so we can organise for it to be sent out."
"When you register your pet, Council will provide you with a numbered registration tag. The tag needs to be on your dog or cat when the animal is outside your property.
"The tag helps our Community Safety Rangers identify your pet if it strays," explained Mr Piasente.
"A microchip is an even better form of identification, as it cannot be removed or fall off like the traditional collar and tag, "continued Mr Piasente.
"Our Rangers recommend having both forms of identification as this helps owners to be quickly reunited with lost or injured pets."
For further information on pet registration or an application form for registering a new pet contact the Community Safety Team on 1300 BCOAST (226 278). Alternatively, visit a Customer Service Centre or Council’s website www.basscoast.vic.gov.au and search for Pet Registration.
