Location Announced For New Morwell Fire Station
A new fire station in Morwell to boost to emergency services in the Latrobe Valley.
Land has been secured for a new fire station in Morwell, providing a major boost to emergency services in the Latrobe Valley.
Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing visited Morwell today to announce the station will be built on Princes Drive, near the corner of Collins St, and will replace the ageing station on McDonald St.
The $9.4 million Andrews Labor Government-funded project – which covers the cost of land acquisition and building the new station – will deliver a range of key features, including:
- four motor-room bays, to accommodate the brigade’s fleet of vehicles
- training areas and meeting rooms
- 12 bedrooms for firefighters rostered on overnight shifts
- kitchen areas with cooking facilities.
The station due to open in 2020.
Ms Shing today also officially handed over the keys to the Morwell Fire Brigade’s newest appliance – an $800,000 heavy pumper.
The pumper is part of a $10.9 million state-wide roll out of 12 heavy pumpers and three heavy tankers, which is being funded by the Andrews Labor Government.
The heavy pumpers provide firefighters with the latest technology and equipment, including Emergency Medical Response equipment, road-crash rescue equipment and battery technology that reduces emissions and improves firefighter safety.
The Morwell Fire Brigade was established in 1915, and currently has 113 members. It is an integrated brigade, comprising both volunteer and career firefighters.
Quotes attributable to Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing
"The new Morwell fire station will be a major addition to emergency services in the Latrobe Valley, providing firefighters with a modern base from which they can respond to fires and other incidents thanks to the Andrews Labor Government."
"The current station on McDonald Street has been a wonderful community asset for many years, but no longer meets the needs of the brigade."
"Plans for the new station are currently being finalised, with the facility due to open in 2020."
