Footbridge superstructure goes home to Victory Parkthe superstructure of the northern footbridge over Traralgon Creek in Victory Park has been lifted into place, following rehabilitatoin work that has seen the bridge closed for the past three months. By Latrobe City Council - 18th May 2005 - Back to News The footbridge crosses a section of Traralgon Creek, with access paths leading to the footbridge from the Victory Park band pavilion and from Peterkin Street opposite Gwalia Street.
Manager Infrastructure Maintenance, Richard Brammall, said that the refurbishment had involved installing two additional beams to strengthen the bridge and replacing the timber deck with a reinforced concrete deck to provide a low-maintenance and significantly stronger structure.
"While the bridge superstructure was removed and fabricated in the contractor’s yard, the abutments were widened to accommodate a wider deck, more suited to today’s requirements.
"Of particular significance is the work undertaken on refurbishing the ‘wrought ironwork’ balustrade. While the ironwork portrays a look that suggests wrought iron balustrade dating from the nineteenth century, the steelwork was in fact only manufactured and installed around the 1970’s," Mr Brammall explained.
"To comply with more recent requirements, the balustrade has been increased in height and an expanded steel mesh skin added to the ironwork. These measures provide a much safer environment for families who may be crossing the bridge with young toddlers.
Latrobe City Councillor, Peter Tyler, said the bridge provided an important link for people enjoying walks through Victory Park. "It also provides access to a route into the CBD for residents living east of Peterkin Street that avoids the highway traffic. It’s a route much favoured by a number of elderly residents who love the peacefulness and amenity of the gardens," Cr Tyler said.
"The bridge has also been a popular spot for wedding photographs over the years. Currently, environmental work is being undertaken on the banks of Traralgon Creek which includes the removal of invasive willows which will be replaced with native vegetation. Once the new vegetation has become established, I am sure the bridge will once again become a popular venue for recording that special day," Cr Tyler said.
Cr Tyler said that it had been necessary to close the footbridge to pedestrians while the work was being undertaken. "I know the footbridge closure may have caused some inconvenience to local residents, and I thank them for their patience during the bridge refurbishment. I’m sure many people are now looking forward to the bridge reopening in a couple of weeks," Cr Tyler added.
The footbridge works have been undertaken by D N McInnes Pty Ltd under the supervision of Latrobe City Council with funding through the federal government’s Roads to Recovery program.
The footbridge is expected to reopen to the public by the end of May, following the final works that involve reinstating the bridge approaches.
