By Portal Admin - 15th December 2019 - Back to News International Day of People with a Disability was marked in the Latrobe City with a motivating address from guest speaker, Andrew Bedggood who shared his personal experiences in overcoming adversity.
Suffering life-threatening injuries as a result of a car accident, which came close to costing him his life, Mr Bedggood spoke of his time in rehabilitation one which he grappled with before learning not to give up following the loss of a leg.
Mr Bedggood encouraged all members of the community to work towards an inclusive community, one where everyone can participate and contribute, something which the annual event he founded the Sale to Sea Disability Challenge promotes.
Latrobe City Council Mayor, Cr Dan Clancey acknowledged that events like International Day of People with a Disability provided the community with an opportunity to celebrate all in the community.
"It is vitally important for us as a community to recognise people with a disability. Days such as today seek to highlight the contribution that people with a disability make across the community," Mayor Clancey said.
"As a whole community we should continue to strive for inclusivity by removing physical, technological and attitudinal barriers for people with disability and Latrobe City Council is fully committed to this endeavor through our recently adopted Disability Action Plan".
"Unique personalities bring unique skillsets and I am glad we here in Latrobe City can embrace all aspects of these valued members of our community".
Acknowledging each person’s uniqueness, skills and strengths the celebration brought together members of the community in a positive environment with live entertainment provided by the Cosmic Chickens while Gippsport showcased their ‘Come and Try’ accessible sport which was a hit with the participants.
