Urban design seminar addressed by LatrobeThe Morwell CBD Redevelopment Plan was the subject of a presentation made by David Powell. By Latrobe City Council - 21st May 2001 - Back to News The Morwell CBD Redevelopment Plan was the subject of a presentation made to a State Department of Infrastructure seminar on Tuesday by Latrobe City’s Group Manager Planning and Development, David Powell.
Mr Powell was invited by the Department of Infrastructure to make a presentation on the Morwell CBD Redevelopment, along with several invited interstate and metropolitan speakers, who spoke on a range of urban design issues. The seminar was opened by Justin Madden, the Minister assisting the Minister for Planning.
Mr Powell said that the seminar, titled ‘Place Making – Precinct Planning’ was run to allow professionals from State Government, local government and urban design consultancies to have the advantage of hearing first hand about urban design planning work that the Department considered to be sound.
"In particular, the Department wanted the seminar attendees to hear about the process followed by Latrobe City in developing the Morwell CBD Revitalisation Action Plan through the work of the Morwell CBD Revitalisation Taskforce," Mr Powell said.
"As the only regional centre represented on the seminar program, significant interest was expressed in the Action Plan which sets a framework in place for, amongst other things, successful urban design improvements, and in the processes being applied to achieve the outcomes of the Action Plan," Mr Powell explained.
Councillor Darrel White said it was recognised that local government played the key role in initiating urban renewal and change and Latrobe was a leader in urban design and renewal approaches.
"Through the Morwell Central Business District Revitalisation Action Plan, the Morwell CBD will increasingly be recognised by the local and broader community as an accessible, compact and highly attractive shopping and cultural destination, providing a high level of services and facilities. The Morwell CBD will in essence be an attractive place to live, close to shops, services and transport," Cr White concluded.
