Join in Australia Day celebrations!

Wellington Shire Council is committing over $6,000 to support community-led celebrations being held around the Shire to mark Australia Day on 26 January – with everyone invited to join in the occasion.

Flag-raising ceremonies, sing-a-longs and BBQs will entertain the crowds throughout Wellington during the day as Australians recognise their achievements as a nation.

The occasion will also see the Council announce the winners of its annual Australia Day Awards, acknowledging the outstanding service and contributions provided by local individuals and community focused organisations. Awards will be presented for; Australia Day Citizen of the Year; Australia Day Young Citizen of the Year; Community Event of the Year; and Community Group of the Year.

In addition Wellington’s newest residents will be sworn in as Australian citizens at a citizenship ceremony to be conducted by Wellington’s Mayor, Cr. John Jago. This ceremony will coincide with Sale’s Australia Day celebrations.

Said Wellington Mayor John Jago: "This day is a significant date which gives us the chance to celebrate and reflect on what it means to be an Australian and what we’ve achieved as a nation. We would encourage everyone to attend an Australia Day event being held near them.

"We extend our thanks and appreciation to the community groups and individuals around the Shire who have supported this significant day by organising events for others to enjoy. It truly represents what Australia Day is all about."

A complete list of events being held in the Shire can be found on the Council’s website at www.wellington.vic.gov.au and details are also available by telephoning 1300 366 244. In addition anyone who is holding an Australia Day celebration within the Shire is welcome to contact the Council to have their event included on the website.
