Young sportspeople to tour Latrobe’s sister cities

Latrobe City has announced that in 2006, more than 40 young sportspeople from the Gippsland region will be participating in a cultural exchange and tour of Latrobe City’s sister cities of Takasago in Japan, and Taizhou in China.

In making the announcement, Latrobe City Mayor, Cr Bruce Lougheed said that the tour will provide an exciting opportunity for young people to represent the municipality and to form long lasting relationships with their counterparts from our sister cities, as well as support existing bonds with the residents of Takasago and Taizhou.

"The 2006 tour follows the outstanding success of a 2003 program, conducted under the umbrella of Latrobe City’s sister cities program that saw aspiring young musicians from the region participate in a 14 day tour of Japan and later form the Latrobe City Youth Band," Cr Lougheed said

"In 2006, sport will become the focus of the cultural exchange, including a confirmed tour for a boy’s Under 14 soccer team and a girl’s Under 14 basketball team tour both scheduled for January in Japan; and a mixed junior table tennis team tour to China in May."

Latrobe City Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley, said that the key goal of Latrobe City’s International Relations Program is to promote, coordinate and foster friendship, communication and understanding between the people of Latrobe City and those of other nations.

"The tours will also bring together young people from diverse backgrounds across the municipality with a common interest in sport and give them the opportunity to develop and demonstrate their sporting and personal skills," Mr Buckley said.

"The young people attending the exchange have recently been selected with the assistance of the Gippsland Soccer League, Latrobe City Energy Basketball, and The Traralgon Table Tennis Association.

"Once again we are embarking on a youth exchange program that will provide the young people of Latrobe City with an outstanding cultural experience," Mr Buckley added.

Manager Marketing and Communications, Grantley Switzer, said that with over 40 local children heading abroad, the program is seeking corporate sponsorship to enable them to pursue this ‘once in a lifetime’ experience.

"In return, businesses will not only have the opportunity to assist our youth but to be part of what will be a highly effective marketing program aimed at promoting the teams, and just as importantly, those organisations who have provided their support for the program." Mr Switzer said.
