The purchase of a new grader means that the total kilometres of local roads graded every year in the Shire will increase. Bass Coast Shire Council bought a new Caterpillar 12H grader to replace a Mitsubishi grader that was purchased by the former Shire of Bass in 1992.

"The new grader is has more power and a range of gears, which enables it to work faster when grading," said Fred Huitema, Operations Team Leader at Council. "This means that we’ll be able to grade more kilometres of roads each day."

The new grader cost $315,000 and was purchased after an extensive evaluation of a range of graders. The old grader had clocked up more than 10,000 hours of road construction and maintenance works since it was purchased ten years ago.

Guy Wilson-Browne, Director of Assets at Council, said that the new grader coupled with other recent iniatives such as an improved zone maintenance system would increase overall maintenance across the Shire.
