Community Newsletter Wilsons Prom Cathedral Fire 1000Hrs

By DSE - 13th February 2009 - Back to News

Fire situation

An 8.30 am fire observation flight reported The Cathedral fire had not increased in size overnight and there remains hot-spots on the northern edge of the fire, north of Five-Mile road.

Weather

A Bureau of Meteorology spot-weather forecast at 6.00 am predicts light, isolated showers this morning decreasing by noon. However, it is likely no showers will impact the fire site. Winds will gust to 35 km/h and remain easterly until this evening, when it is predicted to turn north-east overnight.

A remote weather station will be installed this afternoon in the blackened area close to Five Mile beach, in an effort to obtain more accurate fire-line weather information.

Crew tactics

No planned burn operations will take place today as conditions are unsuitable. Helitak (fire-bombing helicopter) has been deployed to douse hot-spots on the northern edge of the fire.

Crews will continue with the construction of fall-back control lines surrounding planned burn blocks at Millers Landing and Vereker.

Other crews will continue asset protection work around Tidal River. Vegetation clearing to create a 3 metre perimeter around all priority infrastructure is almost complete, including the Visitor Centre, Tidal River store, power plant, wastewater and water treatment plant, staff housing (Tidal River and Yanakie) and Lightstation.

Cultural heritage values have been considered in the construction of all fall-back lines, however two dedicated cultural heritage officers will continue work today to ensure all machinery do not impact upon cultural values.

NO MAP PROVIDED AS FIRE-LINE HAS NOT CHANGED.
