How would you feel if Melbourne’s infamous yellow peril suddenly appeared on the Cowes foreshore?

How would you feel if Melbourne’s infamous yellow peril suddenly appeared on the Cowes foreshore? How about in the middle of Wonthaggi’s central business district? What about at the entrance to Bass Coast Shire, complete with signs welcoming visitors?

People can be very vocal about art in public places. Some people can absolutely adore a piece of art and sing it’s praises, while others can barely contain their loathing for the same piece of artwork.

Bass Coast Shire Council will be holding two forums to provide the community with information about art in public places and hear the communities’ views on the topic. The forums will be held on Saturday 29 September, 10am – 12noon at the Wonthaggi Town Hall Foyer and 2pm-4pm at the Newhaven Community Hall.

The forums will include presentations by:

Maudi Palmer – Director of the Heide Museum of Modern Art, 1981-1996. Curator, Director and Project Manager.

Rodney Scherer – Director of the Latrobe Regional Gallery

Jojo Spook – Gippsland artist

Jenny Whitelaw, Bass Coast Shire Council’s Arts Development Officer explained that everyone is welcome at the forums, which will be an opportunity for members of the community to talk about art in public places and what is important to them,"

"Some of the topics people may like to discuss could be what will improve our townscapes, what images are important to our well being and what themes should be reflected or interpreted in art in public places," said Jenny.
