Labor To Ban Duck Hunting In Return For Green Votes

The Bracks Labor Government will abolish the traditional duck season if it is re-elected on 25 November, Shadow Minister for Country Victoria Philip Davis said today.

By Parliament of Victoria - 9th November 2006 - Back to News

Mr Davis said a duck hunting ban in 2007 was inevitable under a Labor Government, as the party attempts to sure-up green votes in metropolitan Melbourne.

The Bracks Government’s duck hunting plan was detailed yesterday.

"ALP Members Opposed to Duck Shooting have circulated a report to Labor MPs which indicates that the potential green vote far exceeds the number of registered duck shooters, and shows that if the ALP were to announce a ban the ALP would benefit electorally including in the marginal seats in the Ballarat, Geelong and Bendigo areas as well as in metropolitan electorates."

The media release also revealed a strong internal Labor Party campaign to have duck hunting banned, with many branches passing motions to see the end of the traditional duck season.

Mr Davis said it was clear Labor was willing to abandon Victoria’s recreational hunters and shooters in an attempt to portray themselves environmentally conscious.

"The Labor Government chooses to ignore the key role that Victoria’s hunting and shooting organisations play in the conservation of habitat and management of Victoria’s native and introduced game species," Mr Davis said.

"A Liberal Government will continue its support of recreational hunting and shooting organisations, and is committed to retaining the traditional duck hunting season.

"We have announced a range of initiatives to better manage habitat and game species with the aim of encouraging additional investment in hunting related conservation projects.

"A Labor Government will ban duck shooting.

"Duck hunting and other recreational hunting activities will continue under a Liberal Government."
