Lowanna Students Art On Display At Performing Arts Centre

A selection of portrait works from Lowanna Secondary College, Newborough is on display until the end of July as part of the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre Foyer Exhibition program.

By Latrobe City Council - 3rd August 2009 - Back to News

Latrobe City’s coordinator performing arts and venues, Kathleen Roberts said that the exhibition was called ‘The Almost Archibald Prize’ and that the works were developed last year as part of a school competition with Lowanna students from Years 7 to 11.

"The students researched the history of the Art Gallery of NSW Archibald Prize, along with significant artists and artworks throughout the history of this prestigious art event. Students then created their own portrait," Ms Roberts explained.

Lowanna Secondary College’s head of art, Jason Addison, said that there were no real restrictions on who their portrait could be of, with the emphasis on exploring the materials and techniques relevant to the personality of the sitter.

"The competition culminated with an exhibition at the school with several different prizes awarded: all students voted for their favourite portrait (people’s choice); the art staff judged the winners for each year level and the overall winner was judged by the school principal, school council president and the art staff.

Mr Addison added that the school held a competition each year with a different theme.

"By running a competition within the school it includes all students rather than just the ‘art kids’ and they love seeing their artworks on display. Allowing the students to vote for their favourite portrait really got them talking and thinking about what art can be and how artists can express themselves and how they see others," Mr Addison said.

Ms Roberts said the foyer space at the Performing Arts Centre had been dedicated to schools to give students the opportunity to exhibit their work in the broad community rather than just within their school environment.

"Latrobe City is delighted to be able to strengthen its relationships with schools through this initiative, and invites all schools to take up this unique opportunity. Advanced bookings are recommended as the 2009 and 2010 calendar is becoming quite full," Ms Roberts concluded.

Exhibitions incorporated in the Foyer Exhibition Program will be on view during normal opening hours at the Box Office: Mondays to Fridays 10am - 5pm.

Primary and secondary schools interested in showing student works in the Foyer Exhibition program are asked to contact Jenny Peterson, Education and Public Programs Officer with Latrobe City on 5128 5708.
