Promotion through word-of-inbox

Why not get your customers to send the sales pitch for you?

By Lilly Rockwell - 12th September 2000 - Back to News

"Viral marketing" (V.M.) is a term you may have been hearing a lot lately. For all the "regular" people who are not entirely sure what it means, VM refers to the process in which consumers voluntarily spread a promotional message based on their own experience.

It may sound like an impossible feat to convince your existing market to take the time and effort to make positive comments that may benefit your e-business. However, you may be interested to know that many sites are finding VM not only possible but an effective means of promotion.

You can make use of this technique in your e-business using a tool called the tell-a-friend broadcaster.

It works like this: as a visitor moves to close the display window or move on from your site, a text-box appears with your message. The small box prompts your visitor to key in the email addresses of people who may be interested in the site. You may decide to offer a free gift or discount as an incentive. Totally voluntary on their behalf, the visitor may choose to opt out by simply closing the window.

Any friends whom the page was recommended to will automatically receive an e-mail with your sales pitch and a link to your site.

It is a low-cost, fast and simple-to-use tool which can dramatically increase your site traffic. All you need to do is decide on your message and include the code on your homepage.

It’s a win-win situation for all. Your business gets promoted, your visitor gets a great gift and the new visitor learns about a new site which is undeniably one of the best in the world…
