Baw Baw Shire Councillors and senior managers recently completed a full day tour of the shire to look at current and proposed projects.

Features of the inspection tour included a briefing on the dust prevention program currently being undertaken on a number of rural roads, and an explanation of the road maintenance program in a range of areas as well as plans for new roads and roundabouts. Site inspections were conducted in Labertouche, Darnum, Nilma, and Westbury.

The group also inspected new works completed or underway as part of the Small Towns program in Yarragon, Jindivick, Erica, Rawson, Walhalla and Drouin.

Sporting and recreational facilities in Warragul, Longwarry, Neerim South, Willow Grove, and Trafalgar were also inspected.

"All councillors find it very useful to get out and see what is happening, or needs to happen, on the ground," said Mayor Cr Ruth McDonald.

"Councillors know their own wards very well, but they need to vote on issues across the shire so it is good for us to get this broader Shire view first hand. It will lead to better decisions."

Glenn Patterson, Council Chief Executive Officer, agreed the tour was valuable.

"Council officers prepare written reports on issues before Council, but sometimes unless you’ve been to see the problem you don’t get full value from the written report.

"Regular tours such as this are important to give Councillors and staff a broader appreciation of the importance and impact of their work.

"It is also useful for staff to have this opportunity to talk informally with Councillors about works and issues of concern. We all end up with a better understanding of the priorities in the Shire," said Mr Patterson.

On the tour were CEO Glenn Patterson, Mayor Cr Ruth McDonald, Cr Ian Clark, Cr Kevin Tyrrell, Cr David Balfour, Cr John Daniels, Cr Bill Harrington, Cr Robert Brown, Cr Gary Blackwood, and Council staff Steve Chapple, Peter Mangan, Wally Tabensky, Peter Finlayson, Lynn Mizen and Mieke Hammond.

Participants were also briefed on the role of the mobile library in rural communities.
