‘Meals On Wheels’ Deliver More Than Meals

‘Meals on Wheels’ does more that just deliver meals. Our generous volunteers make a world of difference to our clients, decreasing the social isolation of meal recipients and assisting in monitoring their health and well being.

By South Gippsland Shire Council - 27th August 2004 - Back to News

Often the volunteers are a client’s only contact, and if a client is not home as expected, volunteers will contact the next of kin in case there may be a problem.

"Most people like to stay in their own homes for as long as possible and community services such as Council’s Meals on Wheels and Home and Community Care help make this possible," said the Mayor Cr Heather Bligh.

"Meals on Wheels was introduced in Victoria in 1953 to service this need, and without it and other community services, some members of the community are at risk of premature admission to aged care."

To provide this service we need a substantial pool of volunteers. A few hours once a fortnight and a generous heart is all that is required. Volunteers enjoy a great sense of teamwork and camaraderie and tend to get hooked once they start. Further, because of the nature of the operation, volunteers can control the amount of time they commit.

If you’d feel good brightening up someone’s day, then Council Officer Rhonda Mallows would love to hear from you on 5662 9363 to tell you more about volunteering and its intrinsic rewards for you and our clients.
