Wellington amongst first to have Electoral Representation Review

Wellington Shire Council is to begin an Electoral Representation Review next month - one of the first councils in Victoria chosen by the State Government to undertake the exercise in line with revisions to local government legislation.

By news@gippsland - 19th May 2004 - Back to News

Under the Local Government (Democratic Reform) Act (2003) – which amended the Local Government Act (1989) – electoral reviews now have to be conducted every eight years, as decided by the Government. Previously, councils themselves decided when to conduct the review and this had to be undertaken every three years.

This latest review is due to start on 14 June, with the resulting report to be submitted to the Minister by 31 October 2004. It will consider:

· the current number of councillors elected to serve the shire and whether this is appropriate;

· the electoral structure;

· whether there should be a change to the number of wards, and if so what the ward boundaries should be.

Wellington Shire Council is contracting the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) to undertake the exercise on its behalf. The VEC will fully control the process, which will include consultation with the local community.

The shire is presently un-subdivided, with its nine councillors representing all of the municipality.

Said Wellington’s Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb: "This is a very important exercise with significant implications for the shire in terms of councillor representation and whether subdivision into wards is practical and desirable. With this in mind we would urge residents to ensure they take the opportunity to participate in the consultation process and make their views known."
