Own A Pit Bull Terrier?

Wellington Shire Council is reminding owners and prospective buyers of pit bull terriers that they need to declare their pet’s breed when registering it with the Council and require a dog permit with special conditions attached.

By Wellington Shire Council - 25th June 2003 - Back to News

Following community concerns about dog attacks, the State Government introduced controls back in 2001 to help prevent further incidents involving this particular breed. This means that pit bull terriers are classified as a ‘restricted breed’ and must be registered under this category. Owners who fail to comply face a fine of up to $500.

Conditions the owner needs to follow include installing warning signs at their home and ensuring the dog is muzzled when away from the property.

Wellington’s Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb said: "There is nothing to stop anyone from purchasing or owning a pit bull terrier, but there are certain conditions they need to adhere to as a precaution.

"We are simply advising people that they must let us know if they buy a new pit bull terrier puppy or already own an unregistered one. This will help ensure community safety, and save owners from a hefty fine."

Wellington Shire Council’s Local Laws staff are happy to help with further information, brochures and advice to help all dog owners. They can be contacted on 1300 366 244.

Information is also available on the Council’s web site www.wellington.vic.gov.au - in the ‘animal registration’ section.
